RE: What would happen
Bill Watterson would throw a fit. He isn't very fond of Garfield.

Bill Watterson and Garfield
Bill doesn't *hate* Garfield, but he just doesn't like him very much. In one of his interviews he described Garfield as "consistant", and has been critical of Jim Davis' licencing program.

Here's the quote
Here's Bill's exact quote from the interview. He was being asked what he thought of a veriety of cartoonists when Jim Davis came up.
Christie: What about Jim Davis?
Watterson: Uh...Garfield is...(long pause)...consistent.
Christie: Ooo-kay...
Watterson: U.S. Acres I think is an abomination.
Christie: Never seen it.
Watterson: Lucky you. Jim Davis has his factory in Indiana cranking out this strip about a pig on a farm. I find it an insult to the intelligence, though it's very successful.
