Scoop Feedback:
June 22, 1996...
Our first email arrives about a potential Calvin and Hobbes feature project. The anonymous scooper tells us that Bill Watterson is working on the project closely, and is "...very very strong-minded about products related to his cartoon and is having total control on all facets of the movie," the scooper reports. Disney is not one of the potential studios Watterson is looking at the scooper says. Then the scooper mentions that they have been working on the project "...for about a month-and-a-half...". The scooper goes on to mention that the film's plot is comprised of many 'small moments' similar to the comic strip; Calvin making snowmen, Calvin pretending to be Spaceman Spiff, Calvin and his parents, and so on. "There is no computer animation like in the Disney movie and the final print looks kinda like a Charlie Brown cartoon due to the fact that it's just like the Sunday comic and the colors are not really rich, more earthy in quality, and that's how Waterson likes it. He found it extremely hard to cast the voices, he brought them into the room to read without seeing them so he could hear just the voice, then he picked the ones he thought sounded like what he thought they should. They are all unknown actors except for the Hobbes and Calvin's mom's voice, they've been in one or two movies before this. The movie is expected to be released in early '98." We're seeking confirmation of the project; so far, no official annoucement has been released. [Scoop submitted anonymously.]
June 24, 1996...
"Is this movie coming out? I met some kid from Toronto who said he was playing Moe. Is it liveaction or cartoon or what? A better question to ask would be "Is this project for real, or is it as non-existant as it sounds?" [Scoop filed anonymously.]
July 3, 1996...
Another anonymous letter writer; this time, the person mentions that Waterson is working for an animation company called Filmation, though only in the form of a couple of animators to help assist with the project. The scooper also mentions the short segement plotline, but also adds that Waterson wants to keep the film this way for a specific reason. If Waterson changes his mind about the feature film approach, or the project doesn't make it to that step, Waterson would like to play the shorts before movies. The scooper finishes up their email by mentioning the project's release date: sometime late in 1997 or in Q1/Q2 1998. [Scoop submitted anonymously.]
July 13, 1996...
In response to CA's listing of the C&H project on the web pages, this anonymous writer chose to mail us their thoughts on the matter. "I thought the creator of C & H, Bill Watterson, would never do anything like this. Hypocrite." Of course, just because someone writes in to say they know of a film-in-development does not mean said project exists outside the imagination of the individual. [Scoop mailed in anonymously.]
August 11, 1996...
The skeptic: "It is highly unlikely that a movie version of Calvin and Hobbes is in the works, since the creator of the comic strip, Bill Watterson, has never licened his creation, and has no plans to do so in the future.] [Scoop submitted by 'kray24'.]
August 11, 1996...
The believer: "Mr. Bun (Susie's stuffed rabbit) will talk in the movie. We will see that Susie has as active an imagination as Calvin. Bill Watterson has been painting some astounding backgrounds for the film. [Scoop mailed anonymously.]
Of Course, I doubt Mr. Bun will talk in the movie, but if he does, he'll have the voice of Rob Paulsen.
Hey! That Reminds Me! Did You Know There's A Live Action Tracer Bullet Movie? It's Kinda Similar To The
Spaceman Spiff Movies!
If A Calvin And Hobbes Movie Will Come Out, This Is Who I Think Will Voice Who:
Alexander Gould (Calvin, Spaceman Spiff, Tracer Bullet, Stupendous Man, Captian Napalm, Safari Al, Zombie Calvin, Dinosaurs, Nature Or Objects)
Tom Hanks or Tim Allen (Hobbes)
David Spade (Calvin's Dad)
Barbara Goodson (Calvin's Mom)
Cree Summer (Susie, Candance)
Jim Cummings (Uncle Max)
Kevin Michael Richardson (Moe)
Amanda Bynes (Rosalyn)
CALVIN AND HOBBES ROCK!!!
